En route vers Ushuaia - Ushuaia,here we come

Aujourd’hui nous avons navigué le Drake passage…ça brasse un peu plus que lors de notre première traversée…J’ai un peu plus de misère avec le mal de mer aujourd’hui...Je ne sais pas si c’est parce que j’ai passé la journée à nettoyer les 5,500 photos que j’ai prises durant le voyage, au lieu d’être sur le pont à photographier les oiseaux comme la première fois…rien de trop grave, les Gravol font effet…J’espère de voir le soleil demain afin de pouvoir faire un peu de photographie. Au cours de la journée, nous avons eu la chance d’assister à quelques bonnes présentations…une en particulier que j’ai aimée fut donnée par Tim Laman, un photographe the National Geographic, qui nous a expliqué de quelle façon les photographes opèrent pour vendre leurs concepts aux éditeurs du magazine…La capitaine nous a réservé une surprise pour demain…si la température le permet, nous pourrons nous approcher de Cape Horn avant d’entrer dans le Beagle Channel. Nous rentrerons à Ushuaia en fin d’après-midi et dormirons sur le bateau…Lundi midi, nous nous envolons vers Buenos Aires en Argentine…Je ne publierai pas demain…À plus tard!






Today we are navigating through the Drake Passage…There is a lot more rolling today…I have been experiencing some mild motion sickness…Nothing severe, the Gravol are doing the job…I don’t know if it’s because I spent too much time in front of my computer cleaning the 5,500 pictures I took instead of spending time on the deck photographing birds like we did on the first passage. Hopefully tomorrow the birds will show up and we can practice some photography. Today we had the opportunity to listen to some good presentations. One that I liked in particular was given by Tim Laman, a National Geographic photographer, who explained how photographers sell their concepts to the magazine’s editors. The captain reserved a last surprise for us…Weather permitting tomorrow he will try to get us close enough to Cape Horn for us to see it…As Cape Horn is Chile, we will not be entering Chilean water…We will be arriving in Ushuaia late in the afternoon and we will sleep on the ship…We leave for Buenos Aires at noon on Monday… I will be taking a publishing break tomorrow…Talk to you later!

Aurevoir Antarctique - Goodbye Antarctica

C’est avec beaucoup de mélancolie que je fais mon entrée dans le blogue ce soir…Je viens de vivre une expérience incroyable et je ne peux voir comment je vais pouvoir « topper » la dernière semaine que je viens de passer sur le National Geographic Endeavour…Nous sommes présentement dans le Drake Passage en route vers Ushuaia…En plus d’avoir eu le privilège d’être invité à partager la résidence de mes petits amis les pingouins, les êtres les plus perspicaces de la planète, j’ai aussi côtoyé des photographes de renommée internationale qui étaient toujours prêts à partager leurs expériences avec les passagers de l’expédition…Je ne sais pas si jamais je remettrai les pieds en Antarctique, mais j’espère que l’Antarctique ne subira pas trop de dommage dans les prochains 25 ans pour que les futures générations aient la chance de vivre ce que je viens de vivre…Ce soir, je n’inclus qu’une photo dans mon blogue, mais elle reflète mon « mood »…Si tout va bien dans le Drake Passage, j’en publierai plus demain soir…À la prochaine!

It is with some sadness that I write this blog entry tonight…I have just lived a fabulous experience and I can’t see how I will be able to beat this…Tonight we have left the Antarctic continent and are navigating the Drake Passage heading for Ushuaia…This week on the National Geographic Endeavour has been simply fabulous. Not only was I invited in the house of my little penguin friends, but I also got to meet some top notch, world renowned photographers who were always ready to share tips and techniques with all the expedition participants. I do not know if I will ever set foot again in Antarctica, but I can seriously say that it was a life enhancing experience. I can only hope that future generations will have to opportunity to witness what I just been through…Tonight I only publish one photo which really depicts the mood I am in….If everything goes well, I should be able to publish more pics in tomorrow’s edition…Talk to you later!

Le rêve achève - The dream is almost over

Aujourd’hui nous nous sommes arrêtés sur une des îles du groupe des Fish Island où nous avons pu observer un superbe décor et dame nature était au rendez-vous avec une très belle journée ensoleillée…C’était de toute beauté…Une scène de printemps comme on en rêve au Canada…Le sherpa a décidé de prendre une journée de congé et allé faire du kayak de mer…Je crois qu’elle essaiera de négocier ça dans sa convention collective…En après-midi, nous avons suivi des baleines dans une mer bondée d’icebergs…On a pu observer plusieurs baleines à différents endroits…On a eu droit à un superbe spectacle…Demain nous ferons notre dernier débarquement où nous aurons la chance de côtoyer des pingouins puisqu’en soirée nous entreprendrons le chemin du retour…Malheureusement, le rêve achève…À plus tard!





Today we landed on Perch Island, a small island in the Fish Islands…There we had the opportunity get a superb 360 degree view of the area…Mother Nature came to the parade and gave another beautiful sunny day which made the show that much more spectacular…The Sherpa took the day off and went sea kayaking…I think she will be looking to negotiating these kinds of clause in her collective bargaining agreement. Tomorrow will be our last chance to get close to penguins…sadly we are heading back to Ushuaia in the evening…hopefully the crossing of the Drake passage will not be too rough…Talk to you later!

Au sud on est allé - South we went

Nous avons traversé le cercle Antarctique vers 7 h 30 ce matin…Le trajet nous a amenés à travers des eaux remplies d’icebergs…Quel spectacle!...En matinée nous avons visité une ancienne station de recherche britannique qui avait dû être abandonnée en toute hâte il y a 50 ans…Le froid a préservé la station qui est demeurée presque intacte à travers toutes ces années. En fin d’après-midi, nous avons rejoint le point plus au sud de l’expédition...L’Endeavour a navigué à travers un chenal très bondé d’icebergs…Une fois passés à travers le chenal, nous avons eu l’opportunité de faire une autre randonnée de Zodiac… La vue en était à vous couper le souffle… Le staff et l’équipage sont tous d’accord pour dire que c’est probablement la meilleure température qu’ils n’ont jamais vue lors des expéditions qui se rendent jusqu’à cette destination…Maintenant nous repartons vers le nord...Pour ce qui est du sherpa, elle est à former une unité syndicale car elle a rencontré d'autres sherpa sur le bateau qui ont des conditions d'emploi similaire...À plus tard!





Today we reached the Antarctic Circle. Le ship navigated a sea of icebergs to get to our first stop, an old British Antarctic Survey base that had be abandoned in a hurry almost 50 years ago. The cold weather preserved the station in almost the same state as it was when it was vacated…In the afternoon we headed for the furthest point south of the expedition…The ship navigated through a tight canal packed with a icebergs to get to our southern most destination…Once there, we had another Zodiac outing…What a sight!...Everyone staff and crew member agree that this is some of the best weather they have seen in this area, allowing us to enjoy the beauty of the area…We are now heading back north...As far as the sherpa is concerned, she is in the process of forming a union on the ship as she found other sherpas with the same type of grievances...an organizer she is...Talk to you later!

Des vrais tough - Tough little birds

Une autre journée mémorable qui a commencé vers 4 h 30 alors que nous étions sur le pont à admirer le lever de soleil…La mer était assez calme et les baleines sont venues au rendez-vous. Puis nous avons débarqué à l’ile Danco où nous avons observé une colonie de pingouins Gentoo. Ces pingouins sont très perspicaces, car ils doivent grimper une montagne pour rejoindre leurs nids après être revenus de leur baignade. Quel spectacle de les voir négocier ce trajet…La neige a commencé à tomber en début d’après-midi, mais on a quand même pu voir le spectacle que les épaulards nous ont donné alors qu’ils chassaient des phoques près du bateau…Puis plus tard en après-midi, nous avons fait une sortie en Zodiac dans une baie remplie d’icebergs où nous avons pu apprécier une femelle phoque léopardé nous faire tout un spectacle tout près de l’embarcation.…Nous naviguons présentement vers le cercle Antarctique…encore plus au sud...À plus tard...




Another day to remember…It all started around 4:30 AM as we were admiring the sunrise on the observation deck…The sea was calm and the whales came to the show. Then we landed on Danco Island to observe a colony of Gentoo penguins. These little guys have to be the toughest birds on earth. They literally have to climb a mountain to get to their nest after they come back from their swim. They are certainly better climbers than most humans I saw on the island negotiating the climb to see them in their nesting environment. The snow started falling around noon, but it didn’t spoil the show that 5 or 6 killer whales gave us as they were chasing seals around the ship. Later in the after we went for a Zodiac ride in a bay full of huge icebergs, and were lucky enough to have a female leopard seal give us a show. We are now heading for the Antarctic Circle further south....Talk to you later...

Au pays des merveilles – Simply Unbelievable

Comme je l’ai mentionné ce matin, le tout a commencé avec une baleine vers 4 h 30…Mais ce n’était que le début. Nous nous sommes arrêtés à Deception Island, une ancienne station conçue pour la pêche de baleines. La station fût détruite par une éruption volcanique. Le volcan est toujours actif et réchauffe l’eau près de la plage. Nous en avons profité pour faire une petite saucette dans l’Antarctique…Photos, preuves à l’appui…une fois la baignade terminée, nous sommes repartis pour Trinity Island, un endroit que je ne peux que décrire que comme l’endroit le plus pittoresque que je n’ai jamais vu…Après 7 continents et 39 pays, je croyais en avoir vu des choses…mais j’ai été tout simplement émerveillé. Nous avons quitté Trinity Island vers 19:30, et le capitaine a décidé de nous faire visiter une baie de quelque sorte pleine d’icebergs où je dois dire que j’ai pu apprécier le plus sensationnel coucher de soleil sur la planète…temps pour le dodo, le soleil se lève à 4:45 et ça promet…À plus tard.





What a day…the whole thing started with a whale sighting and ended up with the most spectacular sunset I ever had a chance to witness…In between we visited an old whaling station destroyed by a volcano…The volcano is still active and warms the water near the beach…Hell, we went for a swim in the sea…turns out it wasn’t that bad and we enjoyed every minute of it…we even have pictures to prove it…After the dip, we left for Trinity Island where I had the opportunity to enjoy what I believe to be the most awe inspiring site on the planet…After 7 continents and 39 countries I thought I had seen some awesome places…Trinity Island beat them all…It’s a combination of the sites and the proximity with the fauna that makes this whole experience unbelievable…I can just hope that it will all be there for future generations to appreciate…After dinner the captain paid us a treat by navigating the Endeavour in some sort of bay filled with icebergs where I had the opportunity to witness the most sensational sunset one can experience…Got to go…sunrise in a few hours should be promising…If you sleep here you miss stuff…Talk to you later.

Quel monde incroyable - What an incredible world

Aujourd'hui nous allons vers Deception Island...Si la température le permet, nous aurons la chance de nous baigner dans l'Antarctique. Je me suis levé tôt ce matin pour voir si le lever de soleil valait la peine d'être photographié...Pas de lever de soleil, mais une belle baleine qui m'a flippé la queue...Quelle expérience...

Hier nous avons eu une journée superbe. Le matin nous sommes débarqués à Brown Bluff où nous avons passé l'avant-midi avec deux colonies de Pingouins : Adélie, Gentoo. Nous avons aussi vu un phoque léopardé...ça n’en met plein la vue. Dans l'après-midi nous avons débarqué à Devil Island. Moi, j'ai passé du temps sur la plage avec des pingouins Adélie...J'ai beaucoup de poses drôles...On peut observer beaucoup de comportement lorsque on est assis sur une roche pendant une heure de temps. Auparavant, un petit bébé pingouin avait passé près de 8 minutes à me jouer dans les pattes en attendant de se faire nourrir. Malheureusement je n’ai pas pu satisfaire son appétit, mais j’ai quelques petits vidéo amusants. Monique est allée pour une randonnée au haut de la montagne.

Lorsque j'ai mis le pied à terre à Brown Bluff, j'ai finalement réalisé un rêve de longue date, soit de visité tous les continents du notre belle planète, c'est maintenant fait...À plus tard.




Today we're heading to Deception Island...If the weather permits we will have the chance to bathe the sea. I got up early this morning to see if the sunrise was worth photographing...No sunrise but a beautiful whale flipped me her tail...What a sight.

Yesterday we had a superb day. In the morning we landed at Brown Bluff, where we spent the morning with two colonies of Penguins: Adélie, Gentoo. We also saw a leopard seal…it does look like a sea monster. In the afternoon we landed at Devil Island. I spent time on the beach with Adélie penguins…At one point I sat on a rock for 1 hour to observe them…Quite a show…just before that, an Adélie chick spent about 8 minutes between my feet, thinking I was going to feed him…while we’re not supposed to approach them, they come to us and at that point you have to be careful…I have a lot of short and fun videos of this adventure...Monique went for a hike to the top of the mountain.

When I set foot on land at Brown Bluff, I finally realized a dream I have had for a long time: visiting every continent of our beautiful planet...now I can say…been there, done that, and I have the parka…Talk to you later.
